Shannon MacDowell is using the skills she learned earning her BFA in dance at Rutgers in an interesting new way. MacDowell has taken her knowledge of how the body moves and is using it to teach one of the hottest trends in paddle sports – stand up paddle boarding – or SUP as they call it. Originating in Hawaii, the sport is an ancient form of surfing and has reemerged as a way for surfers to paddle longer distances. Even though the sport boomed over the last few years, there is a lack of research about the physiology underlying the paddle boarding stroke and the most effective techniques for paddlers to use. Shannon is working with BTS FREEEMG that captures and records muscle movements via the world’s first WiFi enabled probes. The data recorded will be analyzed to help novice and professional stand up paddle boarders get the most out of the sport.
She teaches stand up paddle boarding at the Manhattan Kayak Company, taking students on the Hudson where they experience amazing views of New York City. She’s also an ACE certified personal trainer and Pilates Mat certified instructor at Uplift Studios.
