Immersive Reality:
new borders for Rehabilitation |
Rehabilitation medicine makes increasing use of technological instruments to orient the therapy choice, measure performance and ability, or monitor rehabilitation follow-up. Technology provides also therapeutics solutions such as Virtual Reality or the Robot Aided Therapy. The virtual reality is a representation of a real or imaginary world reproduced by the computer in which a person can interact with objects and perform specific activities. Examples of advantages that can be taken by using this technology: Motivational Support: The Rehabilitative exercises are very often repetitive and low stimulating for the patient, that can lead to lack of commitment, decreasing the care and the involvement and, consequently, the efficacy of the same treatment.Immersive reality can help with visual, acoustic or olfactory stimulus: the motor exercise becomes the interaction instrument with the virtual scene. The patient will be able to move objects, play with a ball, paint a wall… Perceptive Support: In some syndromes, such as the “unilateral spatial neglect”, subjects present a deficit of consciousness of space. Immersive virtual reality can be an instrument to stimulate during exercises of environment exploring. Cognitive Support: The training of such functions as memory or attention can be contextualized in real activity: the virtual scene can represent quotidian life elements of the subject.   Latin American BTS USERMEETING In conjunction with The “Bienal Bosque Ortopedia 2009” conference held in Bogotá, Colombia last August, BTS organized the first BTS USER MEETING of Latin American Language and also the second Colombian BTS User Meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to put users together with each other in order to exchange information and experiences with regards the daily use of the BTS systems using different applications and to learn and discuss with BTS Specialists and also with the invited international expert.  Markerless Motion Capture
The markerless vision system is a new solution for the movement observation for all cases in which high precision in measurement and accuracy is not required.These systems recognize the whole human body or a body segment from a reference background and apply a model to it. A model is a representation of the subject that contains its morphological and kinematic properties (i.e. a chain of segments linked to each other), obtained from anatomical information of a statistically relevant group of subjects (i.e. measures made with laser scanning). The background, that is an image of the environment without the subject, is subtracted to each single image. By applying a threshold on the brightness to the result, a silhouette is obtained, that is a “shadow Image” of the subject consisting of the outline and a featureless interior. Finally a 3D-figure, called visual hull, is obtained by elaborating frame by frame the data received from each camera. It represents the volume resultant from the union of the information of all the silhouettes. The software elaboration allows fitting the mathematic model to the visual hull, realizing graphical animations. |
