We had the pleasure of participating on 30 September 2019, at the IRCCS Medea of Bosisio Parini (LC), at the opening ceremony of the first Italian hi-tech rehabilitation laboratory for children and young people with motor and cognitive problems.
AstroLab stems from the desire to create a futuristic-looking environment, where therapeutic treatments offered to young patients are transformed into moments of play, where the child’s involvement and enthusiasm are the leaders.
Today with virtual reality and robotics it has been possible to group all the systems dedicated to the research, evaluation and rehabilitation of neurological pathologies in one place.
BTS Bioengineering thanks to the NIRVANA, BTS GAITLAB and OEP SYSTEM technologies, has contributed to creating a spatial atmosphere by giving patients a real multi-sensory experience. The laboratory is divided into rooms, each of which has its own name related to the technology that is used inside it.
« The space window » is an immersive multisensory stimulation room, where thanks to NIRVANA the real protagonist of rehabilitation is the patient, who can freely interact directly with the virtual environment without the obstruction of viewers, gloves and sensors.
The complete movement analysis laboratory, BTS GAITLAB, has been dubbed « The spacewalk ». It is used for the gait analysis of patients from three years of age. The child’s task is to walk back and forth in the room, and through the markers applied in specific parts of the body, the way of walking is studied in a quantitative way.
« The stellar constellations » is instead the room of the OEP SYSTEM, a high-resolution optoelectronic plethysmography system, to quantitatively study the variations of lung volume breath by breath, in a non-invasive way, even for prolonged periods of time and on children even in the first months of life.
AstroLab is the result of the work, dedication and passion of people, who pursue a single goal every day: improving the quality of life of young patients, and we are proud to have contributed to the realization of this space laboratory!
