The use of virtual reality in cognitive rehabilitation

The Journal of the National Medical Association there was an interesting research in cognitive rehabilitation.

„The Growing Use of Virtual Reality in Cognitive Rehabilitation: Fact, Fake or Vision?“ This is the question with who, if I learned the article, and to whom, if it wants to answer with research.

The studies were conducted from 2003 to 2017, by the IRCCS „Bonino – Pulejo“ Neurolesi Center of Messina and Policlinico AOU G. Martino. The research found that the use of virtual reality brings improvements in many cognitive sectors (executive and spatial-visual ability, speech, attention and memory) in neurological patients.

Thanks to virtual reality the patient is stimulated and involved throughout the rehabilitation therapy, which increases the degree of motivation and part of the subject, positively influencing the results of the treatment.

Furthermore, virtual reality (as stated in the Journal of the National Medical Association) „can be observed to improve the effects of conventional therapies, promoting longer training sessions and a reduction in overall hospitalization times.“

NIRVANA also uses immersive virtual reality techniques. The patient, through a sequence of interactive scenarios, lives a multisensory experience improving the performance of the exercises, and therefore the execution of the whole rehabilitation process.
