Sociedad de Educación y Rehablitación (SER) – Gait Analysis Lab
A non-profit organization aiming to provide equal opportunities to people affected by neuromuscolar diseases
Sociedad de Educación y Rehablitación de Puerto Rico (SER de PR) is a non-profit organization founded in 1950 with the mission to provide exceptional services to help people with physical, orthopedic and neuromuscular disabilities, autism and their families to have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and participate in their communities.
The organization contributes to the rehabilitation of children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. In line with its commitment to quality and excellence, SER decided to invest in innovation by becoming the first center in the country to own a Gait Analysis Lab.
SER provides personalized services based on each individual’s physical needs and developmental potential, offering a comprehensive education and rehabilitation program.
Services include:
- – Medical evaluation and treatment
- – Psychological services
- – Physical, occupational and speech therapy
- – Information, follow-up and referrals to government, non-government and community-based organizations
- – Social work
- – Assistive technology
- – Advocacy
- – Community education and orientation related to disability (e.g. VSA and “Así Debo Crecer” video)
Currently, SER de PR supports over 3,600 patients at its rehabilitation center, with more than 20,000 visits annually for medical clinics and therapies.
The most frequently treated conditions include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, congenital malformations, spinal cord injuries, muscular dystrophy, arthritis, stroke, Down syndrome, autism and speech disorders.
The Medical Rehabilitation Department aims to provide fast and accurate diagnosis and treatment, restore function lost due to temporary conditions and promote quality of life through education and prevention programs.
Human movement analysis plays a key role in the clinical management of patients with movement impairments. Traditionally, this analysis relied mainly on clinical observation and the clinician’s experience.
The Biomechanics Lab represents a major step forward, providing objective and measurable data on movement, such as postural deviations and gait patterns. Thanks to this technology, movement can be captured and analyzed with greater accuracy and reliability.
SER de Puerto Rico chose BTS Bioengineering for the first Biomechanics Lab in Puerto Rico because the system is specifically designed for clinical practice. With BTS technology, SER can continue its mission supported by objective data.
This partnership has been transformational, enabling SER to pursue a new goal: to become a center that delivers exceptional service while embracing a new vision of rehabilitation.
“BTS GAITLAB allows for a 3D evaluation of the body movements of patients with neurological and orthopedic pathologies. With it, the surgery operations and the rehabilitation treatments are going to be easier and simpler to understand.”
Thanks to BTS GAITLAB, SER can perform 3D evaluations of body movement in patients with neurological and orthopedic conditions.
This advanced analysis makes surgical planning and rehabilitation treatments easier to interpret, understand and optimize, supporting more effective clinical decisions.
This investment represents an important contribution to improving the quality of life of younger patients, helping them build a better and more independent future.
