The Beijing Institute of Sports Science (BISS) is one of China’s leading research institutions dedicated to the scientific study of human performance and elite athletic development. Operating under the direction of the Beijing Municipal Administration of Sports, the institute conducts research across biomechanics, sports medicine, physiology, and rehabilitation — providing scientific support to national and regional high-performance sports programs. Its mission bridges academic research and applied practice, serving as a key reference point for coaches, medical staff, and sports federations across the country.

A New Testing Protocol for Elite Athletes

Beijing Institute of Sports Science has taken a significant step forward in high-performance sports research by implementing a fully synchronous testing protocol that combines 3D force measurement with surface electromyography (sEMG). With on-site technical support provided by Physiomed engineers, the institute deployed two BTS systems to assess elite athletes from the Beijing Men’s Volleyball Team — focusing on lower limb force exertion patterns and muscle synergy mechanisms during dynamic movements:

  • •PODIUM: 3D Biomechanical evaluation system
  • • FREEEMG: Wireless surface EMG

A Seamless Multimodal Testing Experience

What sets this testing session apart is the ability to achieve full synchronization between the PODIUM force platform and the FREEEMG1000 sEMG system without the need for a synchronization box. This eliminates a traditional bottleneck in biomechanical research, dramatically simplifying the experimental workflow while ensuring complete data consistency across all acquisition channels. Beyond this native synchronization, the platform supports modular expansion — seamlessly integrating:

  • • Infrared 3D motion capture (marker tracking)
  • • Video cameras (motion recording and analysis)
  • • Inertial sensors (dynamic monitoring in free environments)
  • • Analog signal interfaces (connection to external devices)

The result is a comprehensive human motion data acquisition environment adaptable to scientific research, rehabilitation, and elite sport settings alike.

From Raw Data to Actionable Insights

By simultaneously recording ground reaction forces, lower limb joint angles, and sEMG signals from key muscle groups, the research team gained a multi-dimensional understanding of each athlete’s biomechanical profile. The combined dataset provided quantitative evidence on force application strategies, dynamic stability, and muscle synergy efficiency — insights that directly inform:

  • • Training optimization, based on individual force and activation patterns
  • • Injury prevention, through early identification of muscular imbalances
  • • Recovery evaluation, with objective pre/post metrics for each athlete

For a national-level volleyball program where marginal gains translate into competitive advantage, this depth of analysis represents a meaningful shift in how performance science is practiced on the field.
